The Revd Prebendary Susan Sheppard was licensed before an enthusiastic, if numerically limited, congregation on the evening of Thursday 8th October in St Andrew’s Parish Church, Moretonhampstead.
The link to a video of Sue’s licensing is: https://vimeo.com/468616849 – but note that not all web browsers may support this. (So, if one doesn’t work, try another! Or send an email enquiry, using the CONTACT US button.)
Sue and her husband Guy, will be living in Moreton Rectory and will combine her new role whilst continuing as part-time Staff Tutor for Devon on the South West Ministry Training Course (SWMTC), one of the regional Church of England colleges responsible for the formation and training of clergy and lay ministers.
Sue brings to the post of Rector a wealth of experience. The warmth of the welcome given to her and to Guy was very obvious. The only drawbacks were the lack of any hymns (though organist Brian Wilmot played the organ before and after the service), and the lack of refreshments afterwards, thus preventing as much gathering and socialising as is normal on such occasions.
The Bishop of Plymouth presided, and gave an address focusing on three words from the second reading (read by Guy Sheppard), ‘Rejoicing in hope’, and gave examples of how such an attitude might work out in our lives, however much outward circumstances might appear to work against this.
Sue’s appointment represents a further step in co-operation between the churches of the Moretonhampstead benefice and their neighbours in the southern part of the Whiddon Team, following the licensing last March of the Revd Paul Seaton-Burn as Interim Priest-in-Charge of Moretonhampstead, Manaton, North Bovey and Lustleigh within the emerging mission community of the North Dartmoor Parishes.
